Neogene to Quaternary rifting, sedimentation and uplift in the Corinth Basin,Greece

Abstract: Normal faulting, regional uplift and glacio-eustacy have controlled patterns of sedimentation on a variety of scales during the active rift history of the Corinth Basin. Extensive sections through 800 m of early rift deposits are exposed in the north of the basin. These are overlain by andesites dated at 3.62 ± 0.18 and 4.00 ± 0.40 Ma. Early in the rifting process, basin relief controlled by normal faulting determined broad environmental conditions. Slope gradients determined transport process within… Show more

“…In addition to the long piston cores, a series of shallow piston, box, and gravity cores were recovered from within the Gulf of Corinth and the Alkyonides Gulf, sampling the upper few meters below seafloor (e.g., Collier et al, 2000;Lykousis et al, 2007). Onshore exposures of the earlier synrift sequences provide examples of analogs of some of the lithologies and facies likely to be encountered in the offshore rift (e.g., Collier and Dart, 1991;Dart et al, 1994;Ford et al, 2007Ford et al, , 2013Rohais et al, 2007).…”

“…1). Dating from uplifted syn-rift sediments covering the northern Peloponnese suggests that the rifting initiated around 5 Ma ago (Kontopoulos and Doutsos, 1985;Collier and Dart, 1991). Since 1.8-1.5 Ma, the deformation migrated northward, in parallel with an increase of the extension rate (Ori, 1989;Sorel, 2000;Rohais et al, 2007;Ford et al, 2013).…”

“…The synrift formations comprise a stratigraphic sequence of probable Pliocene age, referred to as the Asprohomata-Kalamonas formation, by Gaitanakis et al, 1985), equivalent to the Charalampos marl formation (CMF) of Collier and Dart's (1991). According to the latter, the formation consists of calcareous mudstones and siltstones, with channelized sandstone bodies in its northern part and a general coarsening trend towards the north-east, indicating a paleoflow towards the south.…”
