Neonatal adenomyomatosis of the gallbladder: An incidental finding at 12 hours of life

Abstract: Adenomyomatosis of the gallbladder, although relatively common in adults, is a rare entity in the pediatric age group. Controversy still exists as to whether or not to perform followup ultrasound, as there is a questionable increased risk of gallbladder carcinoma in adults. We present a case of neonatal adenomyomatosis that was diagnosed at 12 hours of life in a term newborn.

“…5,8 In two asymptomatic patients diagnosis was made incidentally by ultrasound imaging, one with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, 2 and the other was a neonate. 12 In our patient the symptoms were highly unspecific. Despite the fact that most children in this series were symptomatic, according to Akcam 1 most patients with ADMG might not be diagnosed before adulthood because it shows no symptoms before the development of stones or inflammation.…”

“…Adenomyomatosis of the gallbladder is a benign, degenerative condition characterized by localized, segmental, or diffuse epithelial proliferation and subsequent deep invagination of the mucosa within the hypertrophied muscular layer of the gallbladder. [3][4][5][6][7][8] The prevalence in children is unknown. 4,5 The pathogenesis of adenomyomatosis of the gallbladder is unclear; abnormal neurogenic function and muscular contraction of the gallbladder may induce glandular proliferation and hyperplasia of the smooth muscle.…”
