Neonatal morbidity mortality outcomes in pre-term premature rupture of membranes

Abstract: We present a retrospective review of 228 pre-term premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) singleton pregnancies followed-up in our clinic between 1996 and 2005. The most common neonatal morbidities in PPROM cases are respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), sepsis and intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH). The route of delivery does not affect newborn intensive care unit (NICU) requirements, perinatal asphyxia, sepsis and IVH rates in PPROM cases. NICU and PPV requirements, RDS, sepsis and IVH rates increase if the Ap… Show more

“…Linehan et al analyzed the neonatal and maternal outcome in women after PPROM, diagnosed between 14 and 23 + 6 weeks' gestation: only 23% of infants were born alive and the overall mortality rate was 95% [88][89][90]. In this study chorioamnionitis was found in 69% and 12% patients developed post-partum hemorrhage [88].…”

“…Conditions due to prematurity include respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), periventricular leukomalacia (PVL), necrotising enterocolitis (NEC), a prolonged stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), neonatal sepsis, required use of positive pressure ventilation (PPV), cardiac abnormalities, hyperbilirubinemia and hemolytic anemia, as well as cerebral palsy, and other long-term outcomes (4). Therefore, appropriate management of PPROM is crucial to improving neonatal and maternal outcomes.…”
