Neonatal outcomes are associated with latency after preterm premature rupture of membranes

Abstract: Objective: To determine factors associated with latency time to birth after preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) and the impact on neonatal outcomes.Study Design: Data on singleton pregnancies with PPROM (n ¼ 1535 infants) were prospectively collected in a computerized perinatal/neonatal database at a tertiary care perinatal center. Latency was characterized as p72h versus >72 h after PPROM.Result: The percentage of women with latency to birth >72 h decreased from 67% in very preterm (gestational age… Show more

“…A retrospective study reported that length of pregnancy at PPROM, twin gestation, and oligohydramnios were associated with the latency period . However, PPROM pathophysiology was not considered in either of these studies . The present study identified oxidative stress and inflammatory response as being associated with PPROM.…”

“…Similar results that a prolonged duration of membrane rupture of more than 48-168 hours has significant influence on the development of chorioamnionitis were found by other researchers as well (37)(38). There were certain studies suggesting that prolonged duration of the membrane rupture period is associated with decreasing risk of newborn's illnesses and the duration of the membrane rupture period is decreasing when there is an increase of gestational age (39)(40).…”
