Neonatal sacrococcygeal teratoma with acute renal failure

Abstract: Teratomas are germ cell tumours composed of multiple types of cells derived from more than a single germ cell layer. The most common site of an extragonadal teratoma is the sacrococcygeal region. We report a case of a 16-day-old female child with a large swelling in the sacrococcygeal region extending laterally into the buttocks with severely deranged renal functions. Ultrasonography and CT helped in making the diagnosis and, more importantly, to delineate the extent of the tumour and the involvement of adjace… Show more

“…Ectopic hair contains medulla and cortex structure of the hair, as well as follicle papilla cells ( Figure S5 B). Such incomplete hair is observed with teratomas and dermoid cysts ( Ahmad et al., 2013 ; Komiyama et al., 2002 ; Lewis et al., 2012 ; Takeda et al., 2003 ; Tavares et al., 2018 ). However, no typical bulge structure was observed, and we did not find any teratoma-like structure in Sox21 KO incisors.…”

“…Furthermore, the hair follicle structure of ectopic hair was unclear in Med1 KO mice. The hair follicle structure in ectopic hairs of teratomas and dermoid cysts were also unclear ( Ahmad et al., 2013 ; Komiyama et al., 2002 ; Lewis et al., 2012 ; Takeda et al., 2003 ; Tavares et al., 2018 ). Our results similarly found unclear hair follicle structures.…”

“…Sacrococcygeal teratomas (SCTs) are the commonest congenital tumours found in neonates with a reported incidence of 1 in 35,000-40,000 live-births. 1 They arise from the totipotent cells of Hensen's node and contain tissue derived from more than one germ layer. 2 The clinical spectrum may vary from well-differentiated benign lesions to immature malignant tumours.…”

“…Human angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (hACE2) is considered as the functional receptor of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and hACE2 is expressed in various organs, including the heart, liver, kidney and lungs. 1,2 hACE2 in the kidneys is mainly expressed in the proximal tubules, afferent arterioles, collecting ducts and the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle. 1 SARS-CoV-2 binds to…”
