Neonatal Septal Deviations

Abstract: In a review of 1000 consecutive neonates of all races, nasal septal deformity was identified in 29, an incident of 2.9%; significantly fewer cases were found in negroid babies (0.1>P > 0.05). Ten cases (35%) underwent manipulation of the deviated septum. Six-monthly review revealed that symptoms associated with the septal deformity are rare. In 7 (44%) of the 16 cases not manipulated, the septum straightened spontaneously during the first few months of life. The appearance of the deviation is not of a d… Show more

“…The cause according to some can be explained by birth molding theory of Gray [20,21]. The incidence of nasal deformities in newborn infants varies from 1.45% to 6.3% [22,46] The cadual border of the septal cartilage extends beyond the nasal spine and thus can be subjected to forces that will lead to either dislocation from its attachment to the nasal spine or fracture of the cartilage vertically [42]. In our study, the total number of DNS cases were 429 & male:female ratio was 35:65 (Table 2, Figure 1).…”

“…There was no correlation found between the incidence of any particular type of deformation and any particular region of the world [15]. The incidence of nasal deformities in newborns has been reported to vary from 1.45% to 6.3% [16]. Grey [17] and Sorri et al [18] have stated that a neonatal mid-septal deformity will not straighten spontaneously, while caudal deformations have a high spontaneous healing rate.…”
