Neopestalotiopsis cavernicola sp. nov. from Gem Cave in Yunnan Province, China

Abstract: In this paper we describe a new species of cave fungus belonging to Sporocadaceae (Amphisphaeriales), collected from Gem Cave, Fumin County, Yunnan Province, China. Initial morphological observations confirmed that our fungal collection is a pestalotioid species. Phylogenetic analyses of combined internal transcribed spacer (ITS), β-tubulin (TUB) and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF1α) gene sequence dataset confirmed that our fungus forms an independent branch within Neopestalotiopsis. Thus, we descr… Show more

“…Neopestalotiopsis drenthii, N. maddoxii, N. olumideae, N. vheenae, and N. zakeelii formed well-supported monophyletic clades in the phylogenetic analysis. The topology of our phylogeny is similar to those generated in earlier studies [29,57].…”

“…have been reported in Australia [5,8], Brazil [26], and China [25]. Many new pestalotioid species have been introduced in recent years [27][28][29][30][31][32][33]. Many unidentified isolates of Neopestalotiopsis were obtained from macadamia racemes with dry flower symptoms.…”

“…The highest diversity of pestalotiopsis-like fungi is recorded in tropical and subtropical countries ( Jiang et al 2022a ; Peng et al 2022 ; Xiong et al 2022 ; Seifollahi et al 2023 ; Sun et al 2023 ). While most pestalotiopsis-like taxa are associated with plants ( Maharachchikumbura et al 2011 ), investigations regarding their biodiversity and occurrence in unusual habitats are rare ( Liu et al 2021 ; Rajulu et al 2022 ).…”

“…Environmental factors including temperature and pH are the most important components mediating fungal growth and helping researchers understand the biology of fungal taxa. In general, pestalotiopsis-like fungi show optimal growth at 20–30 °C ( Liu 1995 ; Tsukamoto and Hino 1956 ; Hopkins and McQuilken 2000 ; Liu et al 2021 ). Most of the known pestalotiopsis-like fungi typically have a wide pH optimum, regularly covering 5–9 pH units without substantial inhibition of their growth ( Wheeler et al 1991 ; Nevarez et al 2009 ; Das et al 2010 ).…”

“…Notes: This species is clearly a member of Neopestalotiopsis according to the results of phylogenetic analyses ( Figure 4 ). Although it was listed as N. coffeae-arabicae in various phylogenies [ 30 , 35 , 41 , 53 , 63 , 68 ], this combination is neither present in the Index of Fungi nor Mycobank, and could also not be traced in the literature, indicating that it has not been validly published, which is therefore performed here.…”
