Neoplastic and Non-neoplastic Proliferative Disorders of the Perirenal Space: Cross-sectional Imaging Findings

Abstract: The perirenal space, located between the anterior and the posterior renal fasciae, is shaped like an inverted cone with an apex that extends into the iliac fossa. Perirenal tumors and pseudotumors primarily originate either from the kidney or as part of a systemic disease process and have characteristic histopathologic features and biologic behavior. The lesions may be classified on the basis of their distribution and imaging features as solitary soft-tissue masses (renal cell carcinoma, lymphangioma, hemangio… Show more

“…Extraadrenal myelolipomas are very rare[17]. They have been reported in the parietal pleura[18], presacral area[19], intrathoracic paravertebral area[20], mediastinum[21,22], gastric antrum[23], perirenal tissue[24], and right iliac fossa[25]. To date, only ten cases of hepatic myelolipomas have been reported in the English-language medical literature[3-12] (Table 1).…”

“…The perirenal type occurs as uniform enhancing masses either around (19) or encasing the kidneys (18). On CT, extramedullary hematopoiesis usually occurs as hypoenhancing lesions of soft-tissue attenuation due to its predominant hematopoietic component; however, fatty components have been reported (20). Calcification has been reported, but it is extremely rare (21,22).…”
