Neoplastic Meningitis

Abstract: Neoplastic meningitis occurs in approximately 5%-10% of all patients with cancer, and aggressive supportive measures are a critical component of comprehensive care. A literature review of the current diagnostic methods, randomized controlled trials, and available treatments was undertaken; and a comprehensive discussion of best-practice supportive care measures is provided. Although the prognosis for those diagnosed with neoplastic meningitis is poor, treatment and supportive care may allow stabilization of ne… Show more

“…Leptomeningeal metastasis (LM) is a deleterious complication of breast cancer leading to death within less than 4–6 months following the diagnosis [1–4]. It touches between 2 and 5 % of patients with metastatic breast cancer, usually later in the course of their disease.…”

“…It touches between 2 and 5 % of patients with metastatic breast cancer, usually later in the course of their disease. LM presents a challenge for an oncologist because of the difficulty in determining the diagnosis and lack of optimal therapy [1, 2, 4]. Early diagnosis of LM is important in order to prevent the development of severe neurological deficits that cannot be reversed with treatment.…”

“…This condition commonly results in tumor growth within the IAC as is shown in our cohort (13/18 TBs) and is often preceded by progressive SNHL prior to the motor deficits, usually bilaterally (9/13 in our cohort). The incidence of neoplastic meningitis (NM) is rising, but this condition has received little attention as a potential etiology for PFnP partly due to the terminal condition of these patients. Recent therapeutic improvements may improve the long‐term survival of these patients and may change this trend.…”

“…[5,6] As a gradual increase of incidence and a high mortality have been observed over time, early diagnosis is crucial. Due to its diverse clinical manifestations, it is difficult to make a diagnosis only with imaging examinations and CSF cytology is necessary to find abnormal cells.…”
