Abstract. The 12 January 2010 Port-au-Prince, Haiti, earthquake (M w = 7.0) triggered tens of thousands of landslides. The purpose of this study is to investigate the correlations of the occurrence of landslides and the thicknesses of their erosion with topographic, geologic, and seismic parameters. A total of 30 828 landslides triggered by the earthquake covered a total area of 15.736 km 2 , distributed in an area more than 3000 km 2 , and the volume of landslide accumulation materials is estimated to be about 29 700 000 m 3 . These landslides are of various types, mostly belonging to shallow disrupted landslides and rock falls, but also include coherent deep-seated landslides and rock slides. These landslides were delineated using pre-and post-earthquake high-resolution satellite images. Spatial distribution maps and contour maps of landslide number density, landslide area percentage, and landslide erosion thickness were constructed in order to analyze the spatial distribution patterns of co-seismic landslides. Statistics of size distribution and morphometric parameters of co-seismic landslides were carried out and were compared with other earthquake events in the world. Four proxies of co-seismic landslide abundance, including landslides centroid number density (LCND), landslide top number density (LTND), landslide area percentage (LAP), and landslide erosion thickness (LET) were used to correlate coseismic landslides with various environmental parameters. These parameters include elevation, slope angle, slope aspect, slope curvature, topographic position, distance from drainages, lithology, distance from the epicenter, distance from the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault, distance along the fault, and peak ground acceleration (PGA). A comparison of these impact parameters on co-seismic landslides shows that slope angle is the strongest impact parameter on co-seismic landslide occurrence. Our co-seismic landslide inventory is much more detailed than other inventories in several previous publications. Therefore, we carried out comparisons of inventories of landslides triggered by the Haiti earthquake with other published results and proposed possible reasons for any differences. We suggest that the empirical functions between earthquake magnitude and co-seismic landslides need to be updated on the basis of the abundant and more complete coseismic landslide inventories recently available.

After the Haiti quake of 2010 an initiative started to better understand shaking effects in the Dominican Republic after natural earthquakes, in particular in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros, the second city in the country as far as inhabitants and economic wealth are concerned. Santiago has suffered several devastating earthquakes; in 1562 the city was rebuilt on a new site (the current location) further south from the responsible fault. It is well known that damage caused by an earthquake occurs associated to a number of factors, ground acceleration is one of them and is usually considered as the key to explain most of the damage. Ground acceleration varies from one point to another depending mainly on: distance to the source of the rupture, soil properties and topography. Regarding the distance, the further from the source the less acceleration is expected due to distance attenuation. On the other hand, different soil properties and different topographies will produce different responses to the propagating wave. Within the range of a few kilometres, the effect of distance attenuation might be far less relevant than the effect of the varying properties of soils. This paper gathers together results obtained from the seismic hazard and microzonation studies developed in the city of Santiago: i) quantification of regional seismic hazard dominated by the Septentrional fault, ii) a new geological mapping of superficial formations, and iii) mapping of zones of homogeneous seismic response and liquefaction susceptibility.

Tropical American Tertiary Floras and Paleoenvironments: Mexico, Costa Rica, and Panama

Three Tertiary microfossil floras from northern Latin America are considered with reference to paleoenvironments and paleoenvironmental trends, especially paleotemperatures: Gatuncillo (middle (?) to late Eocene, Panama), Uscari (early Miocene, Costa Rica), and Paraje Solo (late Miocene, Veracruz, Mexico). The composition of the floras reflect lower temperatures in the late Miocene for terrestrial environments at ca. 18°N latitude, and temperatures comparable to the present for the middle (?) to late Eocene and early Miocene at ca. 9°N latitude. These values are consistent with Tertiary paleotemperature curves derived from 18O and 13C isotope studies of marine invertebrates, and show that the global drop in temperature at the end of the Miocene affected terrestrial biotas at least as far south as 18°N latitude. Comparison of the paleobotanical data with paleotemperature curves further reveals that the late Miocene was not only a likely time for the introduction of northern temperate elements into the Latin American biota (viz., establishment of the floristic and faunal relationship between eastern United States and eastern Mexico), but that earlier times were progressively less favorable because of generally rising temperatures and more tropical conditions. Information on the Tertiary history of vegetation in the Gulf/Caribbean region is also being monitored with reference to the effect of global sea level changes, although the specific influence of these fluctuations cannot as yet be detected.
