“…In 2016–2017 CHMS (20–39 yr: 0.55, 40–59 yr: 0.85, 60–79 yr: 0.83 μg/L), Hg concentration increased with increasing age up to ≤59 yr, but decreased again at ≥60 yr, showing a similar trend despite slight differences [ 7 ]. Similar to the present study, correlations of the concentration level with smoking [ 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 ] and drinking [ 27 , 29 , 30 ] status have been identified in some studies. Correlations with household income and education level have been similarly identified [ 27 , 31 , 32 ].…”

“…Cigarette smokers are exposed to significant amounts of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) (54), which accumulate in kidney tissue more than in any other organ and are toxic at very low dosages (55). According to studies from Egypt, smoking has toxic effects on tubular cells, which are synergistic to occupational Pb (56), mercury (57), and silica (58) exposure. Dietary Cd and Pb seems to confer mild tubular dysfunction, whereas dietary exposure plus cigarette smoking is associated with tubular plus glomerular dysfunction (59).…”

“…The kidneys are one of the main target organs for elemental mercury, which accumulates in the kidneys, some studies have shown this effects (El-Safty et al, 2003;Franko et al, 2005). However, in occupational field, the long-term effects of elemental Hg on the kidneys have not been studied in detail.…”
