Abstract:IntroductionIntracellular Ca2+ signalling regulates membrane permeabilities, enzyme activity, and gene transcription amongst other functions. Large transmembrane Ca2+ electrochemical gradients and low diffusibility between cell compartments potentially generate short-lived, localised, high-[Ca2+] microdomains.
