“…Curiously, the blastema tissue shows a bell-shaped concentration dependence for CBGF activity, whereas 3T3 cells exhibit a more characteristic sigmoidal dependence. Such a bell-shaped concentration dependence was also observed by Choo et al (1978Choo et al ( ,1981 for the stimulation of protein synthesis in cultured blastemas by crude extracts and partially purified fractions from chick brain. This discrepancy in response of the two tissues to increased concentrations of UM-05 retentate material might in fact reflect dissimilarities in culture conditions, the presence of tissue-specific inhibitors, or inherent differences in the cells' responsiveness to the same growth factor.…”

“…Statistical significance of the results was determined using Student's t test for paired observations, Swiss mouse 3T3 fibroblast bioassay. Previous results of Choo et al (1981) raised the possibility that at least one of their partially purified neurotrophic factors for blastema growth was similar in size to the fibroblast growth factors (FGF) first isolated from bovine brain (Gospodarowicz et al, 1978) and pituitary (Gospodarowicz, 1975). Consequently, fractions with activity in our blastema bioassay were simultaneously monitored for their effects on fibroblast growth using a bioassay described by Gospodarowicz et al (1978).…”

“…First, in vivo bioassays involve injection or infusion of nerve extracts into denervated amputated limb [12,16,19,25]. Second, in vitro bioassays involve cultivation of blastemas in medium supplemented with nerve extracts [7,[9][10][11]21].…”
