The significant increase in energy consumption by the growth of the population or by the use of new equipment has brought big challenges to the energy security as well as the environment. There is a need that consumers can track their daily use and understand consumption standards for better organizing themselves to obtain financial and energetic efficiency. With the improvement of smart networks technology for better energy supply, a smart meter is not just a simple measurement gadget anymore, but it has additional functions including smart equipment control, bidirectional communication that allows integration of users and networks, and other functionalities. Smart meters are the most fundamental components in smart power grids. Besides, the meters used with a management system can be utilized for monitoring and controlling home appliances and other gadgets according to the users' need. A solution of an integrated and single system should be more efficient and economical. Smart measurement systems allow monitoring the energy consumption of the final consumers while providing useful information about the energy quality. The information provided by these systems is used by the operators to enhance the energy supply, and different techniques can be also applied for this end, such as charge scheduling, management from the demand side, and nonintrusive load monitoring. The Internet of Things (IoT) is becoming a great ally in the management of smart distribution and energy consumption in smart systems scenarios. To address these issues, this paper proposes and demonstrates a new smart energy meter following an IoT approach and its associated costs and benefits. The developed device incorporates several communication interfaces. In order to easily integrate with any monitoring software solution, the meter has a multi-protocol connection. Finally, the provided solution is validated and demonstrated in real-life environments and it is also under use.

Now a day's the gap between energy generation and demand is increasing. To overcome this problem, the use of generation of energy from renewable sources will satisfy the consumers need. This system also helps to reduce monthly energy bill and also generate error free bill. In this paper, we are using energy which is generated by renewable energy sources and whatever surplus energy is export to the grid. This will reduce the monthly energy bill of consumer by crediting the exported energy charges. The proposed bidirectional smart net metering consists of voltage and current measurement circuit. This measures the instantaneous voltage and current respectively. Then aurdino calculates the net energy by using measured values of voltage and current also the net output energy displayed through LCD. This is interfaced with aurdino at regular interval. Experimental result shows the accuracy in calculating the net energy of system.

Renewable energy (RE) sources play an important role that not only reduces the pressure on fossil fuels but also produces safe and clean energy by developing the microgrid (MG) technology that fulfills the excess demand for power throughout the world. The technological development and the blessing of information and communication technology converts the MG technology to a smarter one, termed as smart grid (SG) and virtual power plant, by establishing a two‐way communication between the consumers and service provider with the aid of smart metering infrastructure, dynamic pricing scheme, energy management system, smart transmission and distribution system. The transformation of the traditional power system to SG enhances the efficiency, flexibility, resiliency, and robustness of the power system due to the increasing level of cyber security and automation. A directional pathway from conventional to smart power system has been carried out in this paper by addressing the present status of the power system, challenges during the operations, and possible solutions. Initially, the control operation of MG with RE and energy storage system has been investigated which is essential to understand the operation complexity and challenges due to the variable nature of the RE, load dynamics, and uncertainties. But the facilities of end‐user feedback, dynamic pricing scheme, cyber security, and smart metering system are not present in MG technology that hampers the proper regulation of controlling operation, generating and distributing energy as well as energy losses. The development of SG with smart technologies overcomes these problems by proper controlling of power usage. Finally, this paper provides a path to move the MG toward SG by analyzing the technical and critical challenges of smart devices, equipment integration, and their control issues and provides possible solutions to overcome the integration and control challenges for a reliable and sustainable operation.
