Net energy of corn, soybean meal and rapeseed meal in growing pigs

Abstract: BackgroundTwo experiments were conducted to estimate the net energy (NE) of corn, soybean meal, expeller-pressed rapeseed meal (EP-RSM) and solvent-extracted rapeseed meal (SE-RSM) using indirect calorimetry and to validate the NE of these four ingredients using pig growth performance.MethodsIn Exp.1, 24 barrows (initial BW = 36.4 ± 1.6 kg) were allotted to 1 of 4 diets which included a corn basal diet, a corn-soybean meal basal diet and two rapeseed meal diets containing 20% EP-RSM (9.5% ether extract) or SE-… Show more

“…However, physical activity was not measured in this study. The value for FHP (787 kJ/kg BW 0.6 /d) is similar to our previous work (Zhang et al., ; Li, Li, et al., ; Li, Lv, et al., ; Lyu, Huang, et al., 2018; Lyu, Li, et al., 2018) and was not affected by dietary treatment, which is consistent with the results of Velayudhan, Heo, and Nyachoti () and Heo, Adewole, and Nyachoti ().…”

“…The ME:DE ratio in experimental diets was within the range of values previously reported (Huang et al., ; Li, Li, et al., ; Lyu, Huang, et al., 2018; Lyu, Li, et al., 2018; Velayudhan et al., ). The NE:ME ratio in the diets was in agreement with data from Kim and Nyachoti () but was greater than the value reported by Noblet et al.…”

“…Two equal quantity of feed were provided at 08.30 hr and 15.30 hr, at which time the respiration chambers remained open for approximately half an hour for feeding sows and total collection of feces and urine (Le Goff & Noblet, ). Data of gas concentration change during this period were deleted and the HP measurement started when the concentration of CO 2 in chamber was higher than 2,000 ppm (Li et al, ).…”

“…The concentration of CO 2 in the chamber increased when the door was closed. The calculation of HP began when the concentration of CO 2 in the chamber was above 2,000 ppm [ 13 ]. Pigs were weighed on d 1, 9, 14, 15, and 16.…”

“…During d 9 to 13, feed refusals and spillage were collected twice daily, dried and weighed. Total but separate collections of feces and urine were conducted according to the methods described by Li [ 13 ]. Feces were collected twice daily at 08:30 and 15:30 h when the chamber door was opened and immediately stored at −20°C.…”
