Network–Behavior Dynamics

Abstract: Researchers have become increasingly interested in disentangling selection and influence processes. This literature review provides context for the special issue on network-behavior dynamics. It brings together important conceptual, methodological, and empirical contributions focusing on longitudinal social network modeling. First, an overview of mechanisms underlying selection and influence is given. After a description of the shortcomings of previous studies in this area, the stochastic actor-based model is … Show more

“…The use of social network data allows for close examination of the parameters of the friendship network, distinguishing, for example, friends who reciprocate friendship nominations, from other friends (Krackhardt & Kilduff, 1999;Vaquera & Kao, 2008;Veenstra, Dijkstra, Steglich, & Van Zalk, 2013). By aggregating the nominations of various members of a clique or friendship cluster, a sociogram of the network can be drawn up and individuals assigned to positions relative to the "centre" of this cluster (e.g.…”

“…Research on peer relationships has increased exponentially over the past two decades, providing much insight into how relationships among children and adolescents develop over time (for a review, see Brechwald and Prinstein, 2011). Most attention has been drawn to the emergence and maintenance of positive relationships, most prominently friendships (for a review, see Veenstra et al, 2013). However, positive peer relationships only represent a selective aspect of the peer ecology.…”

“…In the present study, we add to this previous work by (1) performing a more systematic examination of the interplay between positive and negative peer relationships (i.e., by examining different network configurations); (2) investigating this interplay in two relatively large middle schools covering three years (previous researchers examined them over one year of primary school); and (3) better accounting for alternative selection mechanisms (i.e., accounting for individual and behavioral characteristics that determine selection processes among individuals; see Veenstra et al, 2013).…”

“…With this attention to larger social systems, an immediate focus has been on the roles of peers and peer group norms and dynamics related to this behavior. Attention to the peer context is highly relevant, as adolescence is a period during which peers exert a strong influence on individuals' behaviors through group norms and ongoing interactions (Berndt, 2002;Veenstra, Dijkstra, Steglich, & Van Zalk, 2013). There has been an expansive range of documented peer effects on various behaviors (e.g., academic achievement, substance use; Brechwald & Prinstein, 2011), though few studies have focused on discrimination or homophobic behavior, specifically.…”
