Network performance and competitive impact of the single hub – A case study on Turkish Airlines and Emirates

Abstract: This paper introduces a new model for evaluating connectivity at hub airports. The Hub Connectivity Performance Analyser (HCPA), developed in this context, assesses both schedule-and comfort-related attributes of indirect flights and consolidates the results into two indexes: the Hub Connectivity Performance Index (HCPI) and the Hub Efficiency Index (φ). The proposed methodology is used to derive conclusions about the hub performance and efficiency of two modern influential super-connectors: Turkish Airlines a… Show more

“…However, the quantity and quality of international-international connections indicate the passenger appealing and the airport potential to become an international gateway. Although the MCT on internationalinternational routes via Shanghai is not as competitive as those Middle East airports, it is still worthwhile to fill this gap [16].…”

“…Subsequently, the Hub Connectivity Indicator (HCI) is derived by summing the quality of all viable connections as illustrated in Eq. (3) [16]. The absolute value of HCI refers to the number of equivalent direct flights via hub airports.…”

“…For example, when the flight is not done at the scheduled time, is delayed or canceled, since they pay compensation to the passengers, it leads them to bear extra costs (Berreira et al, 2016: 302). In addition, the high number of landing airplanes and transfer flights increases the capacity utilization rate of the airport (Logothetis and Miyoshi, 2016: 1-2). Choi (2017) found in their studies to test static efficiency and dynamic productivity that the efficiencies of companies with network carriers were high; the efficiencies of companies operating with low costs were low.…”
