Network Power Scheduling for TinyOS Applications

Abstract: Abstract. This paper presents a study of the Flexible Power Scheduling protocol and evaluates its use for real-world sensor network applications and their platforms. FPS uses dynamically created schedules to reserve network flows in sensor networks allowing nodes to turn off their radio during idle times. We show that network power scheduling has high end-to-end packet reception and can achieve power savings of 2-5x for two well-known TinyOS applications over their existing power-management schemes, and over 1… Show more

“…In general, senders and receivers agree on a wake-up schedule and wake up at the same time to communicate. In general, TDMA (time division multiple access) protocols belong to this group, for example, sensor MAC (SMAC) [12], time-out MAC (T-MAC) [13], Flexible power scheduling [14] (FPS), Twinkle [15], and Dozer [16]. In addition, the standard IEEE 802.15.4 [17] defines the Medium Access Control (MAC) based on beacons, which also provides a synchronous rendezvous.…”

“…A possible approach to scheduled wakeups consists in establishing a coarse-grained TDMA schedule defined at the application layer, and exploiting an underlying MAC protocol for actual data transfer. This approach is used by Flexible Power Scheduling (FPS) [8,9], which includes an on-demand reservation mechanism capable to dynamically adapt to traffic demands. Since slots are relatively large, a strict synchronization among nodes is not required.…”

“…The two common problems with this scheme are: they are not flexible and require a strict synchronization among nodes and to achieve flexibility, FPS includes an on-demand reservation mechanism that allows nodes to reserve slots in advance. Twinkle that supports broadcast is an improved version of FPS, presented in [4].…”
