Abstract-Cloud computing is becoming increasingly important for provision of critical services because of potential cost saving, scalability and elasticity. Therefore, it is particularly important for clouds and cloud-based services to be resilient, i.e., they are able to operate correctly and continuously even in the presence of challenges. To do this, a number of resiliencesupporting mechanisms are needed at various levels in cloud infrastructure. It is non-trivial to manage these mechanisms and there is a need for flexible instruments which assist cloud providers in this complex task. Policy based management is an established instrument to manage resilience supporting mechanisms and they are useful if it allows not only high level description of abstract policy (e.g high level security and resilience requirements), but also enables such policy to be refined and eventually mapped into an appropriate low levels in cloud settings. This paper sheds light on basic concepts behind policy based management in cloud, more specifically it emphasizes the use of policy refinement which is the process of translating higher level requirements (such as security and resilience requirements) into the sequence of actions at lower levels that can implement them, in order to generate more refined policies that govern the behaviour of an overall cloud system when under challenge. We finally present two example scenarios on how policy refinement can work for the cloud to establish its relevance for the overall resilience management.

Abstract-In this paper, we investigate the provision of a new form of resilience, namely information resilience -targeting reliable communication of information under normal and adverse network conditions. We harness the power and flexibility of information-centric networking (ICN) paradigm where content are named and can be explicitly identified as opposed to the current host-centric Internet. Using ICN principles, a new modularity-based information caching approach is proposed that leverages the concept of modularity such that information reachability and persistency are enhanced especially under perturbed network scenarios, e.g., network failures due to natural disasters or network under malicious attacks. The main idea of our proposal is to exploit the better connectivity of nodes within certain community construct in a network to provide higher information diversity, and thus allow potential access to a higher number of information objects even under various network dynamics. We conduct extensive simulations based on both real and model network topologies and show that our proposal can significantly increase request satisfaction ratios under highly dynamic network scenarios (i.e., network under multiple perturbations) across different system parameters.

This paper describes how to setup a fully resilient design in a campus network to support Research and Educational Network in Ghana. The main idea of resilient topology for tertiary institutional campuses is to minimize downtime to the barest possible minimum. These down times usually happen during crashes and device upgrades. This paper describes how all critical devices are used twice to avoid having a single point of failure. Therefore, any single device can be turned off without significant disruption for the connected applications and users. Finally an appropriate resilient network that will support both students and staff research and collaborative works, with adequate bandwidth requirement to render the system scalable within the next seven years has been determined and recommended.
