Network Slicing for TSN-Based Transport Networks

Abstract: In this work, we present and analyze methods and mechanisms for interconnecting a network slice control and management system of the mobile network, with an IEEE Time-Sensitive Network (TSN) control plane. IEEE TSN is gaining momentum as a key technology that is able to provide network service guarantees for Ethernet-based communications. Although Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communications (URLLC) have been thoroughly investigated in 5G, incorporating TSN technologies in the Transport Network is expected to unl… Show more

“…The Core Network in 5G is based on service based architecture (SBA). It incorporates fundamental functions, such as (i) session management (SMF), which is responsible for managing the protocol data units (PDU) sessions; (ii) Access and mobility management (AMF), which manages the device access and mobility; (iii) Application management (AF), which is responsible for managing application in 5G Network resources; (iv) User plane (UPF) manages user traffic flows and connectivity [37]. The evolution of mobile technology has led to the 5G underlying objective of connecting things, thereby facilitating the internet of things (IoT).…”

“…On the one hand, TSN is a set of IEEE 802.1 amendments that enable determinism of time-critical traffic flows, even in cases where traffic flows with different statistical characteristics are multiplexed. The use of slicing in TSN-based networks is discussed in [ 75 ]. On the other hand, DetNet defines a set of techniques to extend deterministic behavior to in-slice layer 3 paths.…”

“…Isolation is still a challenging requisite to be wholly met in today’s networks. Several works have addressed the degree of isolation offered by network slicing for specific network domains [ 28 , 46 , 47 , 48 , 49 , 50 , 51 ]. In [ 46 ], two resource allocation methods for isolation in the RAN are presented.…”

“…Thus, resource sharing might not be justified for critical services as it can compromise performance isolation and hinder the proper operation of them. Regarding the transport domain, in [ 48 ] the authors develop a control plane architecture for TSN networks able to support network slicing and show how to preserve slice isolation over a TSN-based TN. With respect to the computing domain, in [ 52 ] the authors address the optimal allocation of a slice in 5G core networks by tackling intra-slice function isolation and guaranteeing the E2E delay for a slice.…”
