Network topology determination using least absolute value state estimation

Abstract: In energy control centers, the estimates of the system state can often be affected by errors in the assumptions made about the topology of the network. This paper introduces a technique that avoids making incorrect assumptions about network status by estimating the status of suspect lines as a part of the state estimation process. This is done by introducing additional variables and measurements in the conventional state estimation problem. The success of the method relies on properties of the Least Absolute V… Show more

“…First, other types of data integrity attacks need to be considered, including the on/off status of a power lines (either from direct measurements or state estimation [25,26,27]), the output of generators, the states of control devices, etc. PMUs could be used to counter such attacks and PMU resource allocation should include mitigating these attacks.…”

“…First, this paper has focused on data integrity attacks related to metering information (the amount of load demanded by parts of the power grid). There are other types of data integrity attacks that need to be considered, including the on/off status of a power lines (either from direct measurements or state estimation [22], [23], [24]), the output of generators, the states of control devices, etc. Second, this work needs to be extended to sparse attacks of size greater than 3.…”

“…Transmission grid operators have a long history of using state estimation for supervisory control and planning but in the distribution grid real-time measurements are sparsely available and much must be inferred. State estimation is a major research topic in the power engineering community [20,28,22,21,4,27,1,23]. The problem of estimating the state of the grid is often divided into two interrelated phases.…”
