Neural input and neural control of the subcommissural organ

Abstract: The neural control of the subcommissural organ (SCO) has been partially characterized. The best known input is an important serotonergic innervation in the SCO of several mammals. In the rat, this innervation comes from raphe nuclei and appears to exert an inhibitory effect on the SCO activity. A GABAergic innervation has also been shown in the SCO of the rat and frog Rana perezi. In the rat, GABA and the enzyme glutamate decarboxylase are involved in the SCO innervation. GABA is taken up by some secretory epe… Show more

“…At variance with other non-neuronal cells, SCO cells are richly innervated (Bouchaud and Bosler 1986;Rodríguez et al 1992;Jiménez et al 2001) and are under the influence of various neurotransmitters Schöniger et al 2001Schöniger et al , 2002aSchöniger et al , 2002b. The serotonergic input to the SCO has been fully substantiated (Bouchaud and Bosler 1986;Rodríguez et al 1992;Jiménez et al 2001), and its inhibitory role on the secretion of RF-glycoproteins (Møllgard et al 1978;Bouchaud 1979;Léger et al 1983), in particular on the synthesis of SCO-spondin (H.G.…”

“…In organ cultures, as in situ, the secretory cells remained joined by gap junctions and thus the organ works as a syncytium; so, relatively few signals can have important effects in the whole organ (Lehmann et al, 1993;González et al, 1999;Jimenez et al, 2001;Schöbitz et al, 2001;Schöniger et al, 2002b). At variance, in primary cultures, the secretory cells behave as individual entities and respond to stimuli according to their own receptor equipment.…”
