Neural Mechanisms Underlying Time Perception and Reward Anticipation

Abstract: Findings suggest that the physiological mechanisms involved in the reward anticipation and time perception partially overlap. But the systematic investigation of a potential interaction between time and reward systems using neuroimaging is lacking. Eighteen healthy volunteers (all right-handed) participated in an event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiment that employs a visual paradigm that consists monetary reward to assess whether the functional neural representations of time perce… Show more

“…Finally, the supraperceptual condition is more correlated with the subperceptual than the supramotor. Coull et al (2000) 1 focus from Smith et al (2011) 1 focus from Apaydın et al (2018) 1 focus from Morillon et al (2009) For each cluster brain regions, cluster size (mm 3 ), side (hemisphere), ALE value, Talairach coordinates, and contributors to cluster (foci) were provided. BA = Brodmann's area; L = left; R = right.…”

“…In particular, the parietal cortex has been implicated in reconstructing sequences of spatio-temporal events and their temporal ordering (15,16,91,92). In conjunction with hippocampus as well as insular and prefrontal cortices, the parietal lobes participate in a distributed neural network that accesses and manipulates the mental timeline according to salience and behavioral context (82,93,94). This network further overlaps core elements of the default mode network which integrates information about current bodily states and memories with incoming sensory traffic.…”
