Neural prostheses

Abstract: The Symposium on Spinal Cord Function and Rehabilitation brought together physiologists, pharmacologists, researchers in the fields of neural regeneration and neuroprostheses (NPs) and rehabilitation clinicians. Numerous strategies to promote regeneration and restore motor function after spinal cord injury (SCI) were discussed.

“…Neural prostheses (NPs) that electrically activate central and peripheral systems have shown significant promise in supplementing function lost to disease or injury (Chapin, 2000;Prochazka et al, 2001;Stein and Mushahwar, 2005). Clinical advancements made possible by NP technology include those that restore hearing (Clark et al, 1977;Kessler, 1999;Spelman, 1999), respiration (DiMarco, 2001), bladder voiding (Brindley et al, 1982;Grill et al, 2001), and upper and lower extremity control (Kraft et al, 1992;Kralj et al, 1988;Liberson et al, 1961;Prochazka et al, 1997;Taylor et al, 1999;Weingarden et al, 1998).…”

“…Most existing neuroprostheses stimulate peripheral nerves either through surface electrodes placed on the skin over nerves or through electrodes implanted blindly in close proximity to nerves [23]. However, the main disadvantage of these devices is their lack of specificity, leading to stimulation of unwanted areas in addition to target areas.…”

“…Inferring meaningful conclusions from these data through appropriate processing and analyses impose a big challenge on the neuroscience and neuroengineering communities [28], [29]. To respond to this challenge sophisticated signal processing techniques are required to support the analyses.…”
