Neurobehavioral Disorder Associated with Prenatal Alcohol Exposure (ND-PAE): Review of Evidence and Guidelines for Assessment

In this review, we discuss the inclusion of Neurobehavioral Disorder Associated with Prenatal Alcohol Exposure (ND-PAE) as a condition for further study in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-Fifth Edition (DSM-5). We present a review of the evidence for impairment in three domains highlighted in ND-PAE: neurocognitive functioning, self2 regulation, and adaptive functioning. In addition, we provide guidelines for clinical asse… Show more

ARND also can be diagnosed if there is evidence of behavioral deficits in at least 2 behavioral domains in the absence of cognitive deficits.…”

“…25,26 However, research has yet to delineate a specific neurobehavioral profile or core symptoms of FASD. 1 Given the variable effects of dose, timing and pattern of alcohol use during pregnancy, 27 in conjunction with varying stages of CNS development, the identification of a central neurobehavioral profile common to all patients with FASD is formidable.…”
