Neurobehavioral protective properties of curcumin against the mercury chloride treated mice offspring

Abstract: In the present investigation, the effects of mercuric chloride (HgCl 2 ) on the neurobehavioural and neurochemical disruption in mice offspring was studied. A total of thirty pregnant mice were divided into six groups. Group II and III were received 150 and 300 ppm of curcumin respectively. Group IV was given 10 ppm of HgCl 2 . Group V and VI were given 10 ppm of HgCl 2 with 150 and 300 ppm of curcumin respectively. In this study, treatment s… Show more

“…Hg exposure induced serious damage to the development of neuromotors, and increased anxiety behavior in pups. Curcumin administration improved neurodevelopment and reduced anxiety, by restoring the levels of neurotransmitters DA, 5-HT, and acetylcholinesterase (AChE), and of the antioxidant GSH, decreased by Hg exposure, in forebrain pups [ 59 ]. Moreover, by using the same experimental conditions, the authors analyzed changes in body weight, sexual behavior, and fertility in male and female pups.…”

“…14 Curcumin (Cur) is a widespread phenolic compound that is extracted from the rhizome of Curcuma longa and that reportedly exhibits robust antioxidant, antiinflammatory, and neuroprotective activity when employed in pharmacological contexts. [15][16][17] When employed to treat ICH model mice, Cur was able to effectively reduce the hematoma volume and associated neurological injury in these animals. 18 However, the efficacy of Cur is profoundly hampered by its unwanted water solubility, poor oral bioavailability, and inability to efficiently transition across the BBB and other physiological barriers.…”

“…Compared with previous studies, this study showed that curcumin had neuroprotective effects possibly via inhibition of brain ACh and AChE activity. When curcumin was administered to mercury-intoxicated pregnant rats, the levels of dopamine, serotonin, and AChE in the brain were lower in the newborn rats compared with the control group [30]. A direct link between brain RAS and the cholinergic system has also been established [4].…”
