Abstract:We examined the relationship of HIV-related cognitive impairment and health-related quality of life (QoL). Subjects were administered measures of cognitive function (a battery of 17 neuropsychological tests) and of QoL (the MOS-HIV questionnaire). Study measures also included comprehensive clinical and neurological evaluation, laboratory testing, and brain imaging studies in patients with impaired neuropsychological evaluation. One-hundred and eleven subjects were examined. Cognitively impaired patients (33.3%… Show more
“…The tentative answer is "yes." Cognitive dysfunction is associated with a diminished quality of life [15]. Thus, a valid argument can be made for clinical trials in patients with SCLC in an effort to improve cognition and perhaps also quality of life.…”
These preliminary findings do not provide enthusiasm for testing donepezil and vitamin E in the manner undertaken here for preventing cognitive dysfunction in SCLC patients. Eligibility criteria and timing of trial intervention are discussed as potential impediments to successful trial completion.

“…Nevertheless, neuropsychological deficits still exist in a substantial proportion of patients despite ARV treatment (15%-50%) [1••, 2]. The persistence of neurocognitive dysfunction in HIV-infected patients is an important issue given its debilitating nature and the negative effects on an individual's overall quality of life [7], ability to perform activities of daily living [8], employment [9], and medication adherence [10,11].…”
Combination antiretroviral therapy has significantly reduced morbidity and mortality with HIV infection. However, HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders persist at a relatively high prevalence rate despite successful systemic treatment. This paper reviews the current issues related to the neurocognitive impact of antiretroviral treatment.
“…Portanto é importante reconhecer precocemente danos sutis, já que, em alguns casos, podem significativamente melhorar a chance de reversão da demência com HAART 5 , melhorar a qualidade de vida com tratamentos adicionais 46 e mesmo possibilitar a monitorização da aderência do paciente à medicação. Além do fato de poder melhorar a orientação para os familiares sobre as alterações comportamentais e cognitivas do paciente.…”
