Introduction: Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is one of the commonest preventable cause of seizure. It is due to development of the larval form of Taenia solium. This disease is endemic in south east Asia including Nepal and has been considered as one of the neglected tropical disease. Methods: All the patients who came to Neurosurgical outpatient department (OPD) of Annapurna Neurological Institute and Allied Sciences (ANIAS) with the diagnosis of NCC with seizure during the study time frame were included in the study. The time frame of the study was January 1st 2017 till December 31st 2018. Results: There were 167 total cases of which 108 (64.7%) were male and 59 (35.3%) were female. Mean age was 27.9 years (SD 13.1 years, range 1 year to 66 years). Frequency of patients were in the age group 20-30 years followed by 10-20 years. In terms of number of lesions, 86% of the patients had single lesion while 14% had multiple lesionsMaximum number of cases had focal seizure with secondary generalization (46%). This was followed by focal seizure (28%). Most common antiepileptics was carbamazepine (51.5%).Mean duration of antiepileptics was 2.5 years (SD 1.47, Range 9 months to 6 years) and recurrence was noted in 7.78% of cases. Conclusion: NCC affects the productive age group with higher proportion being male patient. Single lesion is more prevalent. Proper measures for treatment and prevention of neurocysticercosis is essential and can lead to better control of this condition.

Neurocysticercosis (NCC), a leading global cause of severe progressive headache and epilepsy, in developed or affluent countries is mostly diagnosed among immigrants from poor or developing Taenia solium taeniasis-endemic countries. Taeniasis carriers in Kuwait are routinely screened by insensitive stool microscopy. In this study, enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot (EITB) was used as a confirmatory test for NCC. Screening was performed on 970 patients referred for suspected NCC on the basis of relevant history and/or ring-enhancing lesions on computed tomography and/or magnetic resonance imaging during a 14-year period in Kuwait. Demographic data and clinical details were retrieved from laboratory or hospital records. EITB was positive in 150 subjects (15.5%), including 98 expatriates mostly originating from taeniasis-endemic countries and, surprisingly, 52 Kuwaiti nationals. The clinical details of 48 of 50 NCC cases diagnosed during 2014–2019 were available. Most common symptoms included seizures, persistent headache with/without fever, and fits or loss of consciousness. Cysticercal lesions were located at various brain regions in 39 of 48 patients. Multiple members of 3 families with NCC were identified; infection was linked to domestic workers from taeniasis-endemic countries and confirmed in at least 1 family. Our data show that NCC is predominantly imported in Kuwait by expatriates originating from taeniasis-endemic countries who transmit the infection to Kuwaiti citizens.

Background: Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a neglected tropical disease and common cause epilepsy in developing countries. Aims and Objectives:The purpose of the study was to determine the prevalence of NCC and factor associated with the cause of NCC in Nepalese patients. Material and Methods: All patient with complain of seizure admitted to the College of Medical Sciences, and Teaching Hospital (COMS-TH), Nepal for a period of 2016 were included in the study. All age group patients between 10-80 years old with confirmed diagnosed of NCC were considered for the retrospective analysis. The proportion distribution of NCC was categorized based on the etiology of seizures, demographic profile (gender and age) and dietary habit of patients. Results: Among 142 patients with seizure, 54(38%) were computerized tomography (CT) scan confirmed NCC cases in which 29 (53.7) were male, and 25 (46.3%) were female. Almost 44 (81.5%) patients with NCC were below the age of 50 years, and high prevalence (31.5%) was observed at the age of 10-20 years old patients. All patients depend on the agricultural background, in which 35 (65%) were farmer and 19 (35%) with an agricultural background. Most of the patients lacked good hygienic habits. Additionally, 10 (18.5%) patients with NCC were vegetarian, 44 (81.5%) were non-vegetarian. Among non-vegetarian, only 2 (3.7%) were pork eaters. Most of the patients had poor hygienic habits and eating raw vegetables. All patients were managed with the single antiepileptic drug but, Albendazole plus steroid therapy was added in patients with active lesion observed in CT scan. Conclusions:This study showed a high prevalence of NCC and a common cause of the new onset of seizures in the patient of COMS-TH, Nepal. Also, our data showed that NCC is not associated with pork eaters because NCC was observed more number in vegetarian compared to patients who consume pork meat diet.
