Neuroeconomics Meets Aquaponics: An Eye-tracking Pilot Study on Perception of Information about Aquaponics

Abstract: Aquaponics is an innovative food production method that combines the production of aquatic organisms with plant production. This can have environmental advantages such as reducing land conversion and resource input and waste output through nutrient cycling. To support the dissemination of aquaponics, key stakeholders need to be appropriately informed about this production method, an aspect that has received little attention so far. In this pilot study, visual perception of information about aquaponics was expl… Show more

“…Food sustainability has also recently become the subject of neuromarketing research (e.g., Guyader et al, 2017; Van Loo et al, 2015), an alternative or complementary approach to self‐report methods. A recent study based on eye‐tracking investigated fish farming via aquaponics and showed people's preferences for natural production and environmentally friendly food processing (Schröter & Mergenthaler, 2019). Others have demonstrated that fair trade and other ethical dimensions of food are positively related to increasing willingness to pay and individual satisfaction (Bratanova et al, 2015; Enax et al, 2015), thus emphasizing that social protection is an important driver of sustainable food consumption and environmental safety.…”

“…The pilot experiment was conducted with 16 participants that are students of the University of Szczecin (including 11 males and 5 females). The sample size is comparable to other pilot studies described in the literature concerning eyetracking and virtual reality (Hummel et al, 2021;Kosmyna et al, 2021;Schröter & 2019;Vass et al, 2018). The subjects were between 18 and 24 years old.…”

“…In terms of technology application, aquaponics utilizes the nutrient cycle system formed by crops and aquatic animals, which can reduce the input of resources such as water and fertilizer, and minimize waste output (Schröter and Mergenthaler, 2019), thereby alleviating pressure on the ecological environment. Hydroponics, on the other hand, offers clean planting, saves fertilizers, and reduces water consumption (Pomoni et al, 2023).…”
