Neuroendocrine Control, Inflammation, and Psychological Aspects After Interdisciplinary Therapy in Obese Women

Abstract: Obesity is a chronic and multifactorial disease promoted by positive energy balance. The objective was to evaluate the effects of interdisciplinary therapy in the neuroendocrine control of food intake, inflammatory markers, and psychological aspects in obese women. Forty-seven obese women (43.32±5.82 years, 34.86±3.08 kg/m2), aged 30–50 years, participated in an interdisciplinary lifestyle change therapy, consisting of nutritional counseling, physical exercises, and psychological therapy for 36 weeks. After th… Show more

“…We found no significant correlations for adiponectin and observed no variations in adiponectin levels and leptin/adiponectin ratio, after the 3% weight loss induced by the IT. These results corroborate our previous findings in women with obesity, whose weight loss was of 6% after one year of IT (Moraes et al 2019).…”

“…We observed a small 3.6% decrease in body weight in response to the IT. This was probably due to the also small decrease in total caloric intake (11%), achieved by a 32% diminished , Jamar et al 2016, Moraes et al 2019. It is important to note that, although the decrease of body weight achieved after the 6-months IT was not sufficient to change the obesity grade, it did improve the inflammatory parameters and also affected plasma proteins, as evaluated by mass spectrometry.…”

“…While no significant changes were observed in the perceptual dimension of body image, aerobic exercise improved indices related to anxiety, depression, and sexual function, suggesting a positive impact on cognitive-affective aspects of body image [170]. Furthermore, the effects of interdisciplinary therapy were evaluated on neuroendocrine control, inflammation, and psychological factors in obese women [171]. The findings indicated that the therapy, which included physical exercise among other interventions, not only resulted in physical benefits such as weight loss and improved body composition but also provided psychological benefits, including enhanced body image perception and reduced depression and anxiety scores [171].…”
