Show more

“…In addition, the cell nuclei and cytoplasm in the present study exhibited frequent variations in the staining intensity, which corroborates the findings of Nascimento et al (7) . Neurofibromas are immunopositive for the S-100 protein in 85% to 100% of the occasions (19,32) , although rare findings of negative S-100 immunostaining can occur (6) , as seen in one case in the present study. In our series, none of the cases exhibited spindle cells whose nuclei or cytoplasm stained positive for EMA.…”

“…These clinical characteristics were seen in this case. NFs are immunopositive for the S-100 protein in 85 to 100% of the cases, indicating its neural origin 3,6 . Treatment for solitary NF is surgical excision and recurrence is rare 2,4 .…”

“…However, among neural lesions, this is the one that most frequently affects this region 1,2 . The NF can be intra or extra-osseous, alone or multiple (associated with type I neurofibromatosis) 2,3 . The most common extra-osseous mouth NF locations are tongue, oral mucosa and lips 2 .…”

“…The neurofibroma, a neoplasia originated from the Schwann cells, is the most common type, affecting most frequently the skin 23 . About 25% to 45% of neurofibromas happen in the head and neck, and only 4% involve the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses 24 .…”

“…About 25% to 45% of neurofibromas happen in the head and neck, and only 4% involve the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses 24 . It manifests as isolate lesion or multiple tumors, as it happens to the Type 1 neurofibromatosis (NF1) or Von Recklinghausen's disease 23 . Almost all patients with NF1 will develop a neurofibroma at some point in their lives 25 .…”
