Neuroimaging of Langerhans cell histiocytosis: a radiological review

Abstract: The neuroimaging of Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), in most of the cases, is nonspecific and can vary depending on the location, especially as shown on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In the absence of a clinical history of LCH, isolated central nervous system (CNS) lesion presents a diagnostic challenge. LCH should be considered in the differential diagnosis of craniofacial tumors and neurodegenerative (ND) lesions of the brain. MRI is the modality of choice for investigating the CNS-LCH. Long-term fol… Show more

“…5,9,12 Spinal involvement in LCH is the most frequent cause of vertebra plana in children. 13 Contrary to older descriptions stating that in cases of spinal LCH the thoracic vertebrae are most often involved, [14][15][16][17][18] more current reports demonstrate a higher predilection for the cervical spine followed by thoracic and lumbar vertebrae. 5,11,12,19,20 In recent years, several cases of LCH of the cervical spine were reported.…”

“…Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is the most common type of histiocytosis, with an annual incidence of 4 to 4.5 per million . It arises from the abnormal monoclonal proliferation of dendritic cells, Langerhans cells, and their accumulation in tissues.…”

“…PET‐CT has been used to evaluate LCH lesions . The 18‐Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) isotope identifies metabolically active histiocytes and has the potential to detect histiocytic lesions not identified by bone scans or skeletal surveys .…”
