Neuroinflammation, Oxidative Stress, and Neurogenesis in a Mouse Model of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and the Treatment with Kampo Medicine

Abstract: The diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is mainly symptom-based, and the etiology is still unclear. Here, we evaluated the pathological changes in the brain of a mouse model of CFS and studied the effects of Kampo medicine. A mouse model of CFS was established through six repeated injections of Brucella abortus (BA) every two weeks for a period of 12 weeks. Neuroinflammation was measured by estimating interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), and oxidative stress by nitrotyrosine (3-NT) … Show more

“…It may modulate peripheral immunity and suppress the immune escape of tumors by increasing the infiltration of tumor lymphocytes, decreasing the expression of PD-1 in peripheral blood and reducing the infiltration of PD-1 and PD-L1 in tumors (24). In addition, Bu-zhongyi-qi-tang alleviates neuroinflammation and oxidative stress in a mouse model of chronic fatigue syndrome by reducing the expression of IL-1β, IL-6, and IFN-γ in the hippocampus (25).…”

“…2,3) Previous studies revealed that TJ-41 reduces systemic inflammation in patients with COPD, and when combined with pulmonary rehabilitation, TJ-41 increases body weight and health-related QOL in these patients. 4,5) However, the underlying biological mechanisms remain unknown. Although several mouse models have been proposed to simulate the biological features of COPD, the effects of TJ-41 on lung inflammation in any of the murine COPD models have not been studied thus far.…”

“…Hochuekkito has been found to ameliorate fatigue in patients with such chronic diseases as cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and ME/CFS [ 26 , 27 ]. It has also been found to improve hypocortisolemia and decreased heart rate variability [ 28 ] and, furthermore, to inhibit neuroinflammation [ 29 ]. Together, amitriptyline and hochuekkito may have acted synergistically to ameliorate the patient’s ME/CFS.…”
