Neurological and Musculoskeletal Features of COVID-19: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Importance: Some of the symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, cough, and breathing difficulty. However, the mechanism of the disease, including some of the symptoms such as the neurological and musculoskeletal symptoms, is still poorly understood. “…Of the remaining 227 articles, 147 were excluded because even if they were related to COVID-19 and cerebrovascular diseases, they did not report case descriptions of IS, intracranial bleeding, or CVST. Of the remaining 109 articles, 29 articles ( 1 , 7 , 36 62 ) were excluded from the analysis because even if they reported cases of cerebrovascular diseases in COVID-19 patients, they lacked individual clinical data. “…In a meta-analysis, myalgia is the most common musculoskeletal symptom seen in the prevalence of 30-36% and headache is the most common neurologic symptom in the prevalence of 58.33% among COVID-19 patients [3][4][5][6][11][12][13]. In patients presenting with widespread body pain, COVID-19 tests were found to be positive without known respiratory symptoms of viral disease.…”

“…Perhaps, the question should be asked here, "Is myalgia good enough to explain musculoskeletal involvement in patients with COVID-19?". Recent evidence is emerging on the musculoskeletal involvement [8], and our clinical experience at the University Pandemic Clinic also supported that those symptoms were considerably common and could be quite serious during the period of disease.…”
