“…Originally identified as a flea endosymbiont, it was later incriminated as the causal agent of a febrile illness in patients from North America and Southeast Asia (Ye et al., 2021). Particularly, in Mexico, it was identified as a potential causative agent of pleuritis and hepatomegaly (Pérez‐Osorio et al., 2008).…”

“…In this work, it was possible to detect and typify, for the first time, Rickettsia felis (a species belonging to the group previously called transitional, now known as SFG‐1 (El Karkouri et al, 2022)) in samples of O. puertoricensis . In the southeast state of Yucatan, Mexico, as well as in Peru, the US and several African countries, R. felis is the cause of an emerging neglected febrile illness, called flea‐borne spotted fever (cat flea typhus) (Ye et al, 2021). It has been demonstrated that serological assays in humans identified cross‐reactivity between R. felis and R. typhi (the etiological agent of murine typhus), preventing a definitive diagnosis (Teoh et al, 2017).…”

“…In the Nearctic region, Ornithodoros hermsi Wheeler, Herms and Meyer, and Ornithodoros turicata Dugès were infected by the tick‐borne relapsing fever spirochetes Borrelia hermsii (Davis) and Borrelia turicatae (Brumpt), respectively (Schwan, 2021). Additionally, Ornithodoros capensis Neumann was recorded associated with the emerging pathogen Rickettsia felis Bouyer, Stenos, Crocquet‐Valdes, Moron, Popov, Zavala‐Velazquez, Foil, Stothard, Azad, and Walker, a member of the spotted fever group causing flea‐borne spotted fever (cat flea typhus) (Reeves et al, 2006; Ye et al, 2021).…”

“…The first R. felis infection case in China was reported in Jiangsu Province via PCR analysis in 2014 (Zhang et al, 2014). More cases of rickettsial disease have been diagnosed in recent years owing to the development and application of high-throughput sequencing, and these include five R. felis infections in mainland China (Yang X. S. et al, 2021;Ye et al, 2021;Zeng et al, 2021;Zhang et al, 2021;Cheng et al, 2022) (Figure 1). These were sporadic cases distributed across several provinces (Shanxi, Zhejiang, and Fujian).…”
