Neuromuscular and hormonal responses to a single session of whole body vibration exercise in healthy young men

Abstract: Whole body vibration (WBV) has been proposed as an alternative exercise stimulus to produce adaptive responses similar to resistance exercise. Few studies have analysed acute hormonal responses to WBV. Purpose To evaluate neuromuscular and hormonal responses to an acute bout of isometric half-squat exercise with and without superimposition of WBV. Methods Seven healthy males (22.3+/-2.7 years) performed 10 sets of half squat isometric exercise for 1 min with 1-min rest between sets. Two separate trials were co… Show more

“…Recently, whole body vibration has been proposed as a potential alternative, or adjuvant, to exercise 8 25 , reducing the risk of bone fracture more than walking 26 , increasing the serum levels of testosterone and growth hormone 27 , and representing no stressful stimulus for the neuroendocrine and neuromuscular systems 27,28 . Further, it would be well-advised to determine the infl uence of WBV on CVD risk factors.…”

“…Several studies have looked at the effects of WBV on muscle performance. However, the results are not clear and are sometimes contradictory (9,(13)(14)(15)17,21,22,25,35,38,39 AU7 ). The variability in the protocols used by different authors may explain the inconsistency of the results presented in published studies (13).…”

“…A recovery time of 30 seconds was allowed in between the 3 actions of the same load in power testing, and a recovery time of 180 seconds was provided between the end of the 3 actions of the same load and the beginning of the following 3 actions at a higher load in power testing. During the test, maximum average speed (mÁs 21 ) and average power (watts) were collected using the lineal encoder built into the MuscleLab system, whose internal microprocessor works at a resolution of 10 microseconds. As the load is moved, the optical transducer signal interrupts the microprocessor at every 0.07-mm displacement.…”

“…Po trzech tygodniach miejscowej wibracji u pacjenta nastąpiła istotna poprawa -samoocena bólu w skali VAS zmalała z 6/10 do 3/10. Umożliwiło to podjęcie ćwiczeń zmierzających od poprawy siły mięśniowej obniżonej na skutek długotrwałego unieruchomienia [13].…”

“…After three weeks of local vibration a signifi cant improvement was observed -pain evaluation according to VAS decreased from 6/10 to 3/10. It made it possible for the player to participate in exercises aiming at improving lowered muscle strength which was a result of long immobilisation [13].…”
