“…30 In the Andreoli et al ’s 2019 study, improvement was noted in seven of eight patients with gastrostomy dependence; for patients without gastrostomy dependence, full oral feeds without restriction was achieved in six of seven patients ( online supplemental table 1 ). 36 The standardised mean difference for improvement in feeding behaviours compared with the control group in the study by Song et al 31 (RCT) was 0.39 (95% CI −0.49 to 1.28). The exception was the study by Christiaanse et al 37 (retrospective cohort study), which found that the intervention was not associated with an improvement in feeding ability compared with the control group ( online supplemental table 1 ).…”

“…Marcus et al 34 reported on adverse events and harms, which included mild skin irritation at the placement of electrode and resolved without treatment (N=6). Andreoli et al 36 reported that the NMES was well tolerated and there were no treatment complications. Adverse events were not reported in the other studies.…”

“…Also, few studies determine the specific effects on swallowing physiology suggesting that the NMES improves laryngeal elevation and swallowing delay [10,23] and enhances sensory feedback [23]. Recently, improvement in the aspiration status was seen in 83.3% of medically-complex children who underwent NMES as a component of their feeding therapy [24].…”
