Neuron-specific enolase and S 100B protein as predictors of outcome in ischaemic stroke

Abstract: Although significant differences in NSE and S 100B levels between stroke patients and the control group were found, only S 100B protein level correlated with stroke volume, neurological status at admission and functional outcome. NSE did not correlate with stroke volume, neurological status or clinical outcome.

“…[4][5][6] In ischemic stroke, S100 more accurately correlates with the stroke volume, neurological status at admission and functional outcome as compared to neuron-specific enolase (NSE). [7] Several studies [8][9][10][11] have proved that pretreatment with volatile anesthetics (like sevoflurane and isoflurane) confers prolonged neuroprotection against ischemic cerebral injury. Different mechanisms involving mitochondrial K ATP channels [11] (same as in cardiac preconditioning), ubiquitin-conjugated protein aggregation, [12] and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) [13] have been proposed for this cerebral preconditioning.…”

“…Because the amount of estrogen has a protective effect on the brain, we used the male mouse line embolism method to build the focal cerebral ischemia reperfusion model [10].According to the Longa score standard; the experimental animals were selected to determine the success of the model. S-100β protein is a small molecule acidic protein, when brain injury it released into the cerebrospinal fluid, through the damaged blood brain barrier into the human peripheral blood, so that the blood content increased [11].Therefore, the level of S-100β protein in serum after cerebral ischemia / reperfusion can reflect the degree of injury and death of central nervous system, which is used to judge the degree and prognosis of brain injury [12].…”

“…Наличие второго пика повышения нейронспецифи-ческой енолазы свидетельствовало о геморрагической трансформации острого ишемического инсульта [29]. Вместе с тем в отдельных работах была поставлена под сомнение прогностическая значимость нейрон-специфической енолазы [30,31] и ее корреляция с объемом инсульта [31].…”
