Neuropelveology: An Emerging Discipline for the Management of Pelvic Neuropathies and Bladder Dysfunctions through to Spinal Cord Injury, Anti-Ageing and the Mars Mission

Abstract: Neuropelveology is a new specialty in medicine that has yet to prove itself but the need for it is obvious. This specialty includes the diagnosis and treatment of pathologies and dysfunctions of the pelvic nerves. It encompasses knowledge that is for the most part already known but scattered throughout various other specialties; neuropelveology gathers all this knowledge together. Since the establishment of the International Society of Neuropelveology, this discipline is experiencing an ever-growing interest. … Show more

“…These findings suggest some degree of pelvic peripheral sensitization and the neuromodulation therapies that seek to diagnose and ultimately treat these changes have been consolidated into a field of study preliminarily termed neuropelveology, a discipline seeking to gain traction among mainstream pain researchers and clinicians [32]. While the focus of these neuropelveology studies is highly characterized by investigations into mechanisms contributing to peripheral neuropathies, central changes in pain processing cannot be overlooked.…”

“…This discovery is of major interest since the application of the technique could have important consequences in preventing or even could be suitable for older adults even more than patients with paraplegia, particularly those incapable of active muscle training because of pain, motoric limitations, or subcortical pathologies, and people confined to their bed for a long time (prophylaxis of decubitus!) (Possover, 2020). In-body ENS could open the door to a whole new area of human medicine, in which implanted electronics could help the human body perform better, resulting in longer life.…”

“…Neuropelveology, now a well-developed branch of neurological sciences, deals with pelvic nerves, the generation of pain, and putative sites of lesions along the nerve pathway. Knowledge of these aspects enables the clinician to provide specific treatment [ 24 ]. The diagnosis is confirmed by clinical investigation and imaging modalities.…”
