Neurophysiological correlates of various mental perspectives

Abstract: A common view of consciousness is that our mind presents emotions, experiences, and images in an internal mental (re-)presentation space which in a state of wakefulness is triggered by the world outside. Consciousness can be defined as the observation of this inner mental space. We propose a new model, in which the state of the conscious observer is defined by the observer’s mental position and focus of attention. The mental position of the observer can either be within the mental self (intrapersonal space), i… Show more

“…However, time-related neural responses during problem-solving compared to design tasks across domains are as yet unknown. EEG's high temporal resolution during cognition can help elucidate the stages of the recognition of tasks while provide the temporal basis for information processing (Hinterberger et al, 2014). Averaging the measurements yields a measure of the EEG voltages that are consistently related to the sensory, perceptual and decision-making processes (Dickter and Kieffaber, 2014).…”

“…A preliminary study was conducted by Nguyen and Zeng (2010) which uses EEG to identify the regularities underlying a design process. The EEG results in Hinterberger, Zlabinger, & Blaser (2014) show the neurophysiological discriminability of three mental locations (intrapersonal, extrapersonal and perspective taking) and two attentional foci (self and object). A physiological study (Nguyen & Zeng, 2014b) is conducted to investigate the relationship between designer's mental effort (cognitive aspect) and mental stress.…”

“…Yet there may be more evidence for correlations between mental events and neural activity than Taylor has represented (e.g., Hinterberger, Zlabinger, & Blaser, 2014), and neurobiological theories need not be reductionist. If the whole person is an interconnected living system, then surely many of its aspects will reflect the processes of the whole.…”
