Olfactory loss can be acquired (patients with a history of olfactory experiences), or inborn (patients without olfactory experiences/life-long inability to smell). Inborn olfactory loss, or congenital anosmia (CA), is relatively rare and there is a knowledge gap regarding the compensatory neural mechanisms involved in this condition. The study aimed to investigate the top-down olfactory processing in patients with cA or idiopathic acquired anosmia (iA) in comparison to normosmia controls (nc) during expectancy and reading of odor-associated words. functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to assess brain activations in 14 patients with CA, 8 patients with IA, and 16 NC healthy participants during an expectancy and reading task. Words with strong olfactory associations (oW) (e.g. "banana") or with little or no olfactory associations (cW) (e.g. "chair") were used as stimuli and were presented with a block design Analyses were conducted to explore the brain activation in response to OW expectancy or OW reading between groups (CW as baseline). During the expectancy condition of OW, IA and NC groups showed stronger activation in posterior OFC extending to right insula, caudate region and frontal medial OFC respectively. Whereas during the reading condition of OW, CA patients showed stronger activation in posterior OFC extending to the insula. Increased activation of higherorder brain regions related to multisensory integration among cA patients suggests a compensatory mechanism for processing semantic olfactory cues.

Las ciudades se presentan como la clave para enfrentar el desafío del siglo XXI, la crisis del cambio climático y la crisis sanitaria, debido a las tendencias de concentración poblacional y a los impactos medioambientales asociados a la urbanización. El área metropolitana de Asunción, Paraguay, no escapa de este escenario global, donde la escala barrial es fundamental. Y en ese sentido, el barrio Las Mercedes se destaca del resto del territorio por sus atributos urbanos. Desde una estrategia cualitativa y una perspectiva pos positivista, se plantea una investigación de tipo descriptiva, para indagar en las tendencias tecnológicas y de materiales del espacio construido del barrio Las Mercedes; para identificar las posibilidades de uso sustentable de tecnología y materiales de construcción. El barrio conserva predominantes características de uso de materiales tradicionales, con una tendencia inmobiliaria que arriesga la pérdida de atributos espaciales. El sector cuenta con excelentes oportunidades para la construcción sostenible, a través del uso de materiales y tecnologías apropiadas en el espacio construido, pudiendo contribuir a la sustentabilidad urbana a la escala barrial. Así, este artículo se presenta como un aporte al conocimiento sobre la realidad urbana de Asunción y del barrio Las Mercedes, respecto a la posibilidad de que la construcción sostenible pueda contribuir a la sustentabilidad urbana barrial.

A steady increase in sleep problems has been observed along with the development of society. Overnight exposure to a static magnetic field has been found to improve sleep quality; however, such studies were mainly based on subjective evaluation. Thus, the presented data cannot be used to infer sleep architecture in detail. In this study, the subjects slept on a magneto-static mattress for four nights, and self-reported scales and electroencephalogram (EEG) were used to determine the effect of static magnetic field exposure (SMFE) on sleep. Machine learning operators, i.e., decision tree and supporting vector machine, were trained and optimized with the open access sleep EEG dataset to automatically discriminate the individual sleep stages, determined experimentally. SMEF was found to decrease light sleep duration (N2%) by 3.51%, and sleep onset latency (SOL) by 15.83%, while it increased deep sleep duration (N3%) by 8.43%, compared with the sham SMFE group. Further, the overall sleep efficiency (SE) was also enhanced by SMFE. It is the first study, to the best of our knowledge, where the change in sleep architecture was explored by SMFE. Our findings will be useful in developing a non-invasive sleep-facilitating instrument.
