Neuroprotective effect of hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin in hypoxia-ischemia

Abstract: Neonatal cerebral ischemic injury is a common and debilitating pathology for which there is currently no known purely pharmacological treatments that are effective when delivered immediately after injury. Cyclodextrins are cyclic oligosaccharides that can remove cholesterol from cell membranes and thereby affect receptor function. Cyclodextrins have previously been shown to be neuroprotective in vitro. We showed that hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin is neuroprotective in rats in vivo when delivered by intraperiton… Show more

“…Neuroprotective effects have been demonstrated in studies with methyl-β-cyclodextrin and 2-hydroxypropylb-cyclodextrin [17][18][19] . A recently study was determined that sugammadex had a neuroprotective effect against transient cerebral ischemia.…”

“…In experimental studies, HP‐CD is used as a carrier for lipophilic medications and as an odor remover [35]. Other lipophilic medication carriers such as ethanol and dimethylsulfide have neuroprotective characteristics [36,37]. Frank et al.…”

“…Many cyclodextrin groups protect cortical neurons, cultured without normal calcium signal effect, against glutamate excitotoxicity and NMDA and oxygen-glucose deprivation [36]. Methyl-b-cyclodextrin has been found to protect the hippocampal areas from the effects of anoxia [37]. Abulrob et al [5] studied the cyclodextrin 2hydroxypropyl-b-cyclodextrin (HP-CD) and showed that it had neuroprotective features.…”
