Neuroprotective effects of Liriope platyphylla extract against hydrogen peroxide-induced cytotoxicity in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells

Abstract: BackgroundOxidative stress is involved in neuronal cell death and mitochondrial dysfunction in neurodegenerative diseases. Liriope platyphylla (LP) has been suggested to have anti-inflammation, anti-bacterial, and anti-cancer effects. However, whether LP exerts neuroprotective effects on neuronal cells is unknown.MethodsThe present study was performed to investigate the neuroprotective effects of LP extract (LPE) against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced injury in human neuroblastoma cells SH-SY5Y. To test neur… Show more

“…2). The data from the present study suggest that H 2 O 2 -induced p38MAPK activation facilitates neuron SH-SY5Y cell apoptosis, as previously considered (26). There is a limited data regarding the antioxidant role of SB203580; however, in the present study the inhibitor exhibited an antioxidant capacity by effectively reversing the H 2 O 2 -mediated increase of MDA (P<0.05; Fig.…”

“…Ethanol extract of LR attenuated the H 2 O 2 -induced increases of intracellular oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. It also blocked the PARP and caspase-3 cleavage by modulating p38 activation in SH-SY5Y cells [55]. The 70 % ethanol extract of LR treatments significantly increased the latency time with increased brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) immunopositive cells and increased NGF [56].…”

“…Nevertheless, H2O2 is intrinsically stable, but at higher sustained levels it generates highly reactive OH ·-Several animal studies show convincing protective effects of antioxidants against ischemia-induced damage including the cell/brain permeanttocoferol analogue, Trolox [11] and the SODmimetic (Mn(III)tetrakis(1-methyl-4-pyridyl)porphyrinpentachloride) reduced lipid peroxidation and DNA fragmentation [12]. radicals via the Fenton reaction which oxidizes almost any cell constituent leading to cellular dysfunction [9,10].…”
