“…The coordinating role of the PCC is thought to be driven by rich anatomical and functional connections between the PCC and the rest of the brain that places this region as a good candidate to orchestrate mental representations such as self‐reference (Davey et al, 2016). The second model put forward the hypothesis that the integrative property of the self is associated with the functions of the MPFC as part of the DMN and how this region is coupled with the SN and regions involved in cognitive control such as DLPFC (Guan et al, 2021; Sui & Gu, 2017). The results of the NBS in the present study support the integrative ‘core‐self’ model (Sui & Gu, 2017) by demonstrating that the SRE is generated via interactions between the MPFC and areas outside the DMN such as LPFC and AI.…”

“…Finally, despite considerable evidence for associations between GMV deficits in the right ITG/FG and emotion dysregulation, the literature includes at least some conflicting results. In particular, Guan et al67 assessed GMV correlates of self-compassion facets including over-identification, a construct that reflects getting carried away with negative feelings and exaggerating their importance, similar to the magnification component of PC. Contrary to our results, these authors reported a significant positive correlation between over-identification and GMV in the right ITG.…”

“…In another study, self-compassion correlated negatively with DLPFC activation while viewing sad versus neutral faces ( Liu et al, 2020 ). A recent study using voxel-based morphometry analysis also revealed a negative correlation between dispositional self-compassion and gray matter volume in the left DLPFC ( Guan et al, 2021 ). In addition, self-reassurance, a proxy for self-compassion, elicited greater activity in the DLPFC compared to self-criticism ( Lutz et al, 2020 ).…”

“…A few studies have begun to explore the mechanistic evidence of self-compassion, in which the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) seems to play a key role ( Berry et al, 2020 ; Guan et al, 2021 ). For instance, trait self-compassion was associated with increased DLPFC response to self-criticism versus neutral contexts following a brief self-compassion training ( Lutz et al, 2020 ).…”
