Neutrino bound states and bound systems

Abstract: Yukawa interactions of neutrinos with a new light scalar boson φ can lead to formation of stable bound states and bound systems of many neutrinos (ν-clusters). For allowed values of the coupling y and the scalar mass m φ , the bound state of two neutrinos would have the size larger than 10 12 cm. Bound states with sub-cm sizes are possible for keV scale sterile neutrinos with coupling y > 10 −4 . For the ν-clusters we study in detail the properties of final stable configurations. If there is an efficient cooli… Show more

“…The momentum distribution of w i (k i ) is assumed to be centered around p i with a very small but nonvanishing width such that at macroscopic scales the two particles can be localized in both momentum space and coordinate space -for further explanation, see appendix A of ref. [64]. The specific form of w i (k i ) is unimportant as long as it satisfies the aforementioned requirements.…”

“…Using semi-analytic arguments which suggest an upper bound on the Fermi momentum p F 0.9 m ν , Ref. [113] obtained a maximum CνB density of n max ν,0 1.5 × 10 9 cm −3 (m ν /0.1 eV) 3 for neutrino bound states (in presence of Yukawa interactions of neutrinos with a new light scalar). This theoretical bound is more stringent than the limits/sensitivities shown in Fig.…”

“…Finally, when neutrinos become non-relativistic, the scalar field induces an attractive force among them. This abruptly condenses all cosmic neutrinos into lumps of size M −1 φ [46][47][48][49][50][51][52]. Figure 1 summarizes how long-range interactions affect the evolution of cosmic neutrinos by changing their equation of state (defined as the ratio between pressure and energy density) as a function of redshift z.…”
