Neutron-gamma discrimination with UGAB scintillator using zero-crossing method

Abstract: The new-type scintillator, Ultima Gold Alpha-Beta (UGAB), was studied for its neutron-gamma discrimination capability. The figure-of-merit and peak-to-valley values for the neutron-gamma discrimination spectra of UGAB scintillator when exposed to (241)Am-Be neutron source were presented. The results show that this new-type scintillator can efficiently be used in neutron-gamma discrimination experiments.

“…One of the main advantages of liquid scintillators is their ability to distinguish between fast neutrons and gamma rays. Again, appropriate substitutes to replace flammable scintillators are very welcome in this field . In this context, a 3 cm 3 quartz cuvette of EHCz was exposed to a 1 MBq 252 Cf neutron/gamma radioactive source, and its response was compared to that of a BC‐501 A sample of the same dimensions.…”

“…In this circuit, the separation performed with the Anode detector signal and by using PSD modules. This method, due to the fact that it uses fast signals, in addition to the increased quality in separation, also has a small dead time, and it is good for use in neutron-gamma separation in a high number of counts [4], [5].…”

“…Whatever the FOM number is greater than 1, the quality of the detector separator is better. The ratio (P/V) regarding the width rate of the neutron gamma spectrumrum is defined as the division of the count average of 2 neutron and gamma peaks on the count of lower height of the valley between 2 peaks [4], [5]. …”

“…The NGD has important applications in neutron flux/spectrum determination in heavy ion therapeutic systems, fast neutron (above tens of MeVs) production in spallation reactions (Yoshioka, 2011) and photoneutrons of about 1 MeV energy produced as a result of high-energy (above 12 MeV) X-ray interactions in medical linear accelerators (Esposito et al, 2008). A variety of NGD techniques such as zero-cross, Owen, time-of-flight, and charge comparison methods have been frequently used by many researchers around the world (Divani-Vais et al, 2012;Binaei Bash et al, 2013). The digital discrimination systems introduced and significantly developed in recent years have found numerous applications and they show many advantages over analog systems.…”
