Neutron star equation of state and the possibility of complex self-energy in Landau theory of a Fermi liquid in the presence of a strong, quantizing magnetic field

Abstract: Using the relativistic version of Landau theory of Fermi liquid with σ − ω and ρ mesons exchange, we have obtained an equation state for dense neutron star matter in presence of strong quantizing magnetic field. It is found that in this scenario the self-energies of both neutron and proton components of dense neutron star matter become complex under certain physical conditions. To be more specific, it is observed that in the exchange diagrams of σ, ω and neutral ρ transfer processes and in the direct interacti… Show more

“…Properties of matter in strong magnetic fields are of basic interest [1,2,3,4,5] and have great potential applications in the physics of compact stellar objects and the early universe cosmology [6]. The observations of soft gamma repeaters and anomalous X-ray pulsars have provided compelling evidence that the magnetic fields on the surface of young neutron stars are in the range of 10 14 − 10 16 G [7].…”

“…For neutron as neutral particle, we have used the standard Dirac spinor solutions. As we have found in Mandal et al (2006) that with these spinor solutions, the traces as mentioned before become complex in nature for the diagrams we have considered.…”

“…We shall follow some of our recent studies where we have developed a relativistic formalism of Landau theory of Fermi liquid for dense neutron star matter in presence of strong quantizing magnetic field with the exchange of σ -ω-ρ mesons (Ghosh et al 2004;Mandal et al 2006). We have noticed that the densities of both proton and neutron components, which are in β-equilibrium are functions of magnetic field strength.…”

“…For example, in Ref. [3], based on the relativistic version of the Fermi liquid theory, an equation of state for the dense substance of a neutron star in the presence of a strong quantizing magnetic field was obtained. Another interesting research area is the study of non-Fermi and holographic Fermi liquids [4].…”
