Neutrophil CD11b and soluble ICAM-1 and E-selectin in community acquired pneumonia

Abstract: Exhaled nitric oxide and eosinophil sputum markers are considered noninvasive ways in which to evaluate airway inflammation in asthma. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationships between these methods of evaluation in asthmatic children. In a cross-sectional study of 25 mild±moderate asthmatic children (aged 6±13 yrs, 10 patients on inhaled steroids) exhaled NO was measured along with induced sputum by inhalation of hypertonic saline solution. The sputum was processed for eosinophil count and eosino… Show more

“…First, increase in CD11b expression level is a specific marker as no increase was observed in normal subjects. This finding are in agreement with data previously reported by Wang et al (1998) and Glynn et al (1999) who showed an up-regulation of neutrophil CD11b expression in community-acquired pneumonia and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)-induced bronchiolitis, respectively. Moreover, an increased of CD11b was observed in two infected patients who presented with pneumonia without septicemia (Table 1, patients 6 and 9).…”

“…In ALI/ARDS, the inflamed lesion spreads over the original pneumonic lung segment, leading to the accumulation of leukocytes in a large pulmonary area. sES is selectively expressed in vascular endothelial cells, and plays important roles in the accumulation of leukocytes during pneumonia 26 . Thus, elevation of sES in pneumonia patients is thought to indicate the presence of major pulmonary parenchymal inflammation.…”

“…It has indeed been reported that systemic inflammatory status increases with age (Franceschi and Campisi ), but several studies also reported little or no difference in the level of expression of individual leukocytes surface markers, including CD11b, between elderly and young subjects (Glynn et al. ; Noble et al. ).…”
