Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio predicts disease progression following intra-arterial therapy of hepatocellular carcinoma

Abstract: NLR may be a serologic biomarker of early progressive disease after intra-arterial therapy of HCC. Future research should focus on outcomes by treatment type or potentially combining arterial therapies with ablation and/or targeted biologic agents.

Some studies have also evaluated the role of inflammation-based scores in those undergoing orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT), with OS nearing 75% after 4 years, 86 and tumour recurrence appearing in 8%-15% of all graft recipients that fulfilled the Milan criteria.…”

“…Likewise, deterioration of NLR following RFA may predict earlier recurrence and associated mortality . Moreover, an elevated NLR also seems to have prognostic significance in those undergoing trans‐arterial chemoembolization (TACE) therapy . It should also be noted that lower cut‐off values of NLR were used for prognostic stratification in early stage HCC compared to advanced disease.…”

“…NLR has been investigated in regard to different embolisation and ablation techniques. High NLR (>3) predicted significantly worse treatment results (p = 0.014) and early disease progression (p < 0.0001) in 86 treatment-naive patients subjected to arterial chemoembolisation or radioembolisation [55]. Elevated pre-treatment NLR (>1.85) was associated with overall survival and disease-free survival in 178 HCC patients subjected to transcatheter arterial chemoembolisation (TACE).…”

“…He et al 10) reported the usefulness of NLR and platelets to lymphocytes ratio (PLR) after transarterial chemoembolization. Taussig et al also reported 11) that NLR predicted disease progression following intra-arterial therapy of HCC. In the present study, NLR was good biomarkers for predicting long-term outcomes after Hx.…”
