New acceptor–π-porphyrin–π-acceptor systems for solution-processed small molecule organic solar cells

Abstract: 1a η η η η = 1.36 % PC 61 BM 1b η η η η = 3.16 % PC 71 BM Abstract: Two new conjugated acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-π-D-π-A) compounds having a Znporphyrin acting as donor and linked by ethynylenes to one or two units of thienylenevinylene and capped by dicyanovinylene groups as acceptor units have been synthesized and their photophysical and electrochemical properties were investigated. These compounds were used as donor materials and PC 61 BM and PC 71 BM were used as acceptors in solution-processed bulkhetero… Show more

“…Firstly, the trimethylsilyl group was quantitatively removed by reaction with TBAF and this was followed by copper-free Pd-catalysed Sonogashira coupling [22] with 2-iodothiophene derivatives 3aeb [23,24] Under these conditions, the reaction proceeded smoothly to afford aldehydes 4a,b in 83% and 80% yield, respectively. Subsequent Knoevenagel condensation of 4a,b with cyanoacetic acid, using piperidine as base, yielded 1a,b in 89% and 82% yields, respectively, after purifi-cation by column chromatography (silica gel, chloroform: methanol 10:1).…”

“…Increasing of photo conversion efficiency is the main purpose in formulation of solar cells, so the donor-acceptor pairs are carefully designed. Recently two new conjugated acceptor-donor-acceptor (A--D--A) compounds having a Zn-porphyrin acting as donor and linked by ethynylenes to one or two units of thienylenevinylene and capped by dicyanovinylene groups as acceptor units have been obtained and their photophysical properties were investigated [53].…”
